Hi David,
Googled the last name and your site popped up. Wonder if you knew of a William Hanauer? He was an owner of a municipal bond firm in Newark New Jersey and had a brother, Jack who also owned a different bond firm. The last I heard of Mr. Hanauer, he had moved to California and remarried, leaving here in New Jersey a wife, Edna and two children, a son and a daughter.
If you know anything about him I would love to hear from you. I worked for him in the 70's and he was quite a role model for me back in the day.
Thanks!
Barbara Savino

I'm so pleased to be told of this website by my grandson, Dexter Hanauer. My husband's ancestor was Peter Hanauer, born in Prussia in 1813-came to the US in 1836. The 1870 census shows him in Dayton, Ohio with 6 in his household, Nicholas,33 Joseph,20 Anna,18 Henry,15 Elias,10 and Phillip,7 years old. This Joseph is ours and had 6 or 7 daughters, but only 1 son, Walter Bernard. Walter had 1 son, Joseph Henry. Joseph Henry had one son,Joseph Eugene. Joseph Eugene (my husband) had one son, Joseph William. Joseph William had one son, (my grandson) Dexter. If any the family can be further traced, we would be so happy to know.

My great-great grandparents on my fathers side immigrated here from Germany sometime around 1900. My father was the only male child to carry on the name, but I have three brothers who have several sons between them - some of whom live in the southern US around New Orleans. It's so great to come in here and read how were all connected. Thanks for starting this guestbook!

Dear Mister Hanauer!
I'm an austrian-dutch author of childrens books and recently during research fora new book. During my research I just now, saw that in 1999 a mrs Ruth M Hanauer (110 Street Forrest Hills) believes her 2 cousins Martin Joseph Epstein (1924) and Werner Dietrich Epstein (1921) both born in Frankfurt am Main, but living in Amsterdam during the WWII died in the holocaust. This is true for Martin Joseph but not, as far as I can see for Werner Dietrich. He (very possibly) and certainly his father and mother Hermann Max Epstein and Selma Kahn survived.
If you have this lady among your contacts (and if she is still alive),please could you forward this.
Sincerely
Rachelvan Kooij

I had no idea there were this many Hanauers! Our little branch is relatively small. My grandfather's father emigrated from Germany--the story goes that he was Jacob von Hanau and when he got to New York he became a Hanauer. But I was in Germany and France in 1987 and learned Hanauer was a common name near Strasburg. I have pictures of a Hanauer Strasse. My grandfather's name was Sylvan. I believe he had a sister named Ruth (as well as a wife named Ruth). My dad's name is Adam. I also have a brother named Seth and a sister, Rachel. And those were the only Hanauers I knew growing up in NJ, Mass, and NH. Interesting to hear of so many others.

Hello Mr. David Hanauer,
It says on your website to contact you to get the email address of kin or whoever. I was hoping you might be able to give me Thomas Haviland Hanauer and Cal Hanauer's email addresses. Thomas is my older brother Tommy and I haven't heard from him for seven years since our father Donald Hanauer passed away. And Cal is my cousin....so if you would not mind sending me their email addresses...your help would be very much appreciated.
Thankful for your website

I think your website is very helpful and truly is so touching to see all your family finding one another. I think I might be part of this clan. My Stiefel heritage is from Richen, Germany. Three brothers came to the USA around 1845, I don't know much else about the German area or if there are documents that have surfaced in your research. If you know of anything that could help me I would be most appreciative.
Thankyou,
Penny Stiefel

This is one of the most amazing pieces of information to come to me. This is the actual listing of my great grandfather's factory in Berlin in 1928.
The most amazing part is that this comes to me from a new found relative living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We had been in contact back in 2005 when he had emailed me from David Hanauer's website. His great grandmother was the sister in law of the brother of my great great grandfather, David Hanauer. He is of the same generation as my father. He has a daughter who is 39 years old. She is not married and has no children.
Since receiving my family tree, I have now confirmed that I have living relatives. One in Las Vegas, one in England,Êand two in Buenos Aires.
My cousin, Juliette will be coming out here in November and we plan to start filming a documentary on our family. I have already invited Enrique from Buenos Aires to participate in the documentary. I will next invited Ella from Las Vegas and Michael from England.
I believe that we are all being led to each other for something really big. It is just amazing that I have been able to receive so much information from so many sources from around the world.
I hope you all find this just as fascinating as I do.
Have a wonderful day,
Terri

Hello David;
I was born in Dayton Ohio to Leo John Hanauer and Rebecca Marie Everhart. My father was born in Dayton March 7, 1895. He was 46 when I was born. I never knew his parents, as they passed when I was a baby. All I know about them is that they were born in Germany and spoke very little english. I don't even know their names. My father had a brother Fred and sisters Gertrude and Eleanor. All are now deceased. There used to be quite a few Hanauer's in the phone book here in Dayton, now there are only 4, My brother Edward, Mark, Paul and Steve. None of the last 3 are relatives (that I know of). Just thought I'd like to pass this info on.
Best Regards, Carol

Hello David,
My name is Michael Edward Hanauer. I was born to Dalton Paul Hanauer and Stella Maxine Spencer in Fort wayne Indiana. I have three sisters: Connie Sue, Deborah June, and Barbara Lynn. I googled my name and came across your site. My father once told me that our ancestors all came from Germany. He also told me that the name was originally "Von Hanauer", but that the Von was dropped when the first immigrants came to the states. I don't know much about my family tree except that a lot of my relatives popu-
lated the tri states of Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.I also know that my father had an uncle Ernest that was a fireman in the New York area. As someone else has posted, I too remember my father telling me at one time as I was growing up that if the name was spelled Hanauer; that we were all related in one way or another at least in the state of In.
Thanks very much for your site and the opportunity to add my name to the mix. I have also been astonished to find out just how many Hanauers there are. Thanks again.

I'm interested in learning about the Hanauer family in the US. My grandmother said that my family immigrated to the United Sates during the 1800s. I will visit Europe next summer, and I plan to do some family research there, especially in Lithuiana. If anyone would have some information to start with that would make my research easier. Thank you very much.

Both my Great-Grandparents lived and died in Jamestown, OH in a very nice house on the lake.

This entire journey of looking for the truth of my families survival and looking for distant relatives has been a great adventure. In April I was asked to talk about my research on a local radio show. Almost 16 minutes of airtime.
The interview occurred on March 13, 2007 on KQNA 1130 AM in Prescott, Arizona.
The main topic was my families' involvement in the Rosenstrasse Protest that had occurred in Berlin from February 27, 1943 till March 8, 1943. And how I came to realize my family members involvement. This was the only non-violent protest that was documented in Germany that had resulted in the release of Jewish spouses to their Christian spouses.
There is also reference of the concentration camp that my family ended up being transported to in 1944. And a postcard that had been written to my grandmother from her grandfather as he sat on a train that was transporting him to a labor camp in 1941. The wife of a soldier on the train delivered the postcard to my grandmother.

David,
I am so excited. I just wanted to share this with you.
I have been able to get in contact with professor/author, Nathan Stoltzfus in Florida who is a World War II Historian. He wrote a book called "Resistance of the Heart: Intermarriage and the Rosenstrasse protest in Nazi Germany".
A part of my families history involves the protest on Rosenstrasse.
Follows is the correspondence so far.
Terri Hanauer-Brahm
Dear Dr. Stoltzfus,
I am the daughter of a holocaust survivor. My father was born in 1940 Berlin. Both his parents were considered half bred. Both of my great grandfathers were born to Jewish parents, while both of my great grandmothers were born to Christian parents. I just recently learned that my great grandfather, Jonas Rosenfeld had been imprisoned on Rosenstrasse Feb. 27, 1943 till Mar. 8, 1943. The way I came upon this was purely by accident. I had been flipping through movie channels when I came to a German movie. I started reading the subtitles and felt that this was important for me to watch. I purchased the movie from Amazon.com and watched it all the way through. This was back in August. Just last week I was going over papers I had copied from my great grandfathers journal. They were translated by a close friend from Germany. I saw arrested:
Dec. 13, 1942 until Jan. 26, 1943, Hbgstr. (not legible)
Feb. 27, 1943 until March 8, 1943, Rosenstr.
Aug. 21, 1944 until Sept. 8, 1944 Schulstr.
I have so much more I would like to discuss with you. My grandfather, Hans Heinz Hanauer was murdered in Auschwitz on March 31, 1943. I have learned that he was a member of a resistance group and he had been held in Spreenhagen from March 3, 1941 until he was transported to Auschwitz on March 4, 1943. I have a postcard that he had written to my grandmother while he sat on the train on March 3, 1941. The wife of a Nazi soldier had hand delivered it to my grandmother.
I need more help to uncover what my family had kept secret till their deaths. Everything I have found has been by writing letters.
Just last year I received from an old family friend of my grandfather and his sister, a wooden bowl and a wooden plate that my grandfather made as an apprentice. I feel very fortunate to be able to receive such history. I would like to finish my research within the next year. I hope you will be able to send me in the right direction.
Sincerely,
Terri Hanauer-Brahm

Dear Ms. Hanauer Brahm
Thank you for your wonderful letter. it seems you are in the middle of very promising and extremely interesting research. Were all three of the arrests you document below of so called "half Jews?"
all best to you in the new year,
Nathan
Dear Dr. Stoltzfus,
My grandfather Hans Heinz Hanauer and grandmother Ursula Hanauer nee Rosenfeld both had 2 Jewish grandparents and 2 Christian grandparents.
I know that my grandfather Hans was warned by the Underground SDP (banned Social Democrat Party) that there was a warrant for his arrest. The Underground SDP was an organization of people belonging to the Adolf Koch Institute circle. The Institute was a school for gynmastiks with Alpine sun and healthiness consultation. Some of these people had remained with the police at the request of the Underground SDP. They worked in the so-called Card Index where Aryans and Jews were registered. In this position, they had the opportunity to alter cards to Aryanize. My grandfather did not take the warrant seriously and left his hiding place. He was with my great uncle Gerd Rosenfeld and Gerd's wife Hela Rosenfeld nee Bergman when he was arrested on the street.
My grandmother and father, Uri (then 14 months old) were at the train station to see my grandfather leave to go to Gut Winkel, Spreenhagen on March 3, 1941. My father did not want to leave his father. A soldier told my grandmother to hold him so he would not run to the train. It was while my grandfather sat on the train that he wrote my grandmother a note. Ester Binder delivered the note to my grandmother. She was the wife of one of the soldiers on the train. I have this note. It is a beautiful reflection of what he was feeling at that moment. I had it translated and receive great joy each time I read it.
My great grandfather Max Hanauer was married to Frieda Hanauer nee Teske. They had owned a raincoat factory before the war. Bombs destroyed their factory during the war. They survived the war by hiding in a small cabin in Grunau. A woman named Lotti Mader owned this cabin. She was an employee of my great grandfathers factory.
Max had gone to Berlin every week with a rucksack on his back. Max wore a Bavarian costume with a great wrap, which covered his Jewish star. His neighbors in Grunau were told that the Hanauers came from the Bavarian country, where they had lost their home through bombs. It was a believable story because my grandfather had spoken very well in the Bavarian dialect. He was born in Wurzburg. He had before the war belonged to the "Bayern-Verein" (Bavaria club). My grandfather Hans and his sister Ilse Hanauer were made to go each Sunday to this club. This club offended them both because they did not allow Jews.
My great aunt Ilse was living with another employee of my great grandfather Max. They shared the same ID card. The Underground SDP had destroyed Ilse?s papers. She had worked with the Underground SDP and was in love with Adolph Koch. They had an affaire, but because Ilse was considered "half-bred", Adolph could not commit totally to her.
Do you have access to the list of detainees on Rosenstrasse? I am almost sure my grandfather was taken there before being transported to Auschwitz. The date of his leaving Gut Winkel is March 4, 1943. The date of his transportation to Auschwitz was March 6, 1943. I also wonder if my grandmother Ursula was taken to the center on Rosenstrasse? I know that my great grandmother Frieda Rosenfeld nee Tscharntke protected my grandmother and great grandfather. My father Uri Hanauer was living in a Christian home as the child of this family. I do not know who these people were. My great grandmother Frieda Rosenfeld past away on August 16, 1944. It was August 21, 1944 that my grandmother Ursula and great grandfather Jonas was detained once again. The SS asked my grandmother where my father was and they picked him up, then he was reunited with my grandmother. They were on Schulstr. Until September 8, 1944. They were then transported to Theresienstadt. This is where they were until they were liberated on June 8, 1945.
I would like to be able to fill in the blanks. I know that the German government kept detailed records. My grandfather was not supposed to have been killed. These were the words from my great aunt Ilse. I want to know how she had this idea. She never went into a lot of detail about our family. Everything I am telling you has come from people in Berlin who were associated with my family before, during and after the war.
Thank you for any help you can provide me.
Sincerely,
Terri Hanauer-Brahm

Hi
I came across your page over the Christmas period and was particularly interested in Enrique Kahn's entry(copied below), especialy his family tree and the line through Berthod & Rosa Hanauer. Their son Herbert was my father He was the first of the family to leave Germany, arriving in Dover GB on the day before his 16th birthday. Its a long complex and personal story that I would rather not go into here because I am currently working on a book about it. I would very much appreciate if you could either let me have Enrique's e-mail address or let him have mine and ask him if he would get in touch me.
Best regards

Dear Dr. Hanauer,
I came to the surname HANAUER in my family tree thru 2 ways.
1). The stepson of my great-great-grandfather was ABRAHAM BAMBERGER of Wiesenfeld, married with GEHEL HANAUER (died 1/5/1921). They had two sons: Ferdinand and Louis Bamberger.
2). LENORE KAUFMANN (a sister of my great-grandmother Sara Kaufmann married to Sigmund Kahn) was married to HIRSCH HANAUER (died 17/5/1904). Hirsch and Lenore had, (as far as I know) 4 children: Berthold, Moses, Frieda and Fritz.
Berthold Hanauer, born 23/3/1877 in Wiesenfeld. died 25/1/1949 in UK, married 27/5/1912 ROSA HEIDENHEIMER.
They had a daughter Edith married to Max Gruenbaum, and had a son James Michael Greenwood.
Only Edith is surviving now.
I hope some related Hanauer will find me.
Best regards from Buenos Aires
Enrique Kahn

My daughter, Sandi, just posted below and my brother, Joe, did so a couple of years ago. Just one correction on Sandi's post: My father, Otto Hanauer, was born in Schluchtern, my mother, Betty, in Rexingen. I was born in 1935 in Stuttgart, Joe in 1937.
Things were getting very unpleasant for Jews in Germany so in May, 1938, my parents bundled the family (Joe, my grandmother, Bertha Zurndorfer, and me) on the SS Washington and sailed for the USA. My third birthday was aboard the ship. Kristallnacht occurred five months later.
We settled in Chicago because a cousin, Dr. Walter Zurndorfer, signed for us. But my parents had to fend for themselves. My father formed a small leather goods company and sent both of us through college.
I've visited the family homes in Stuttgart and Rexingen, and also Hanau, where the family name originated. An industrial suburb of Frankfurt, its main claim to fame is as the birthplace of the brothers Grimm. It was heavily bombed during WWII, so virtually nothing exists of the pre-war city. Even the Schlossgarten has no Schloss (castle). The city seal is a swan perched on a helmet, which is perched on a shield. It could probably serve as the Hanauer coat of arms.
Joe and I have four daughters between us, so we are the end of the line when it comes to our branch of the family name. I'm glad there are so many others to carry it on.

Wow! Who knew there were so many Hanauers in the U.S.? Thanks for a great web site! As far as I can tell, my uncle, Joe Hanauer, is the only one from our branch of the family tree who has posted here. My father, Eric Hanauer, was born in Stutgart, Germany, in 1935. He is the son of Otto Hanauer and Betty (Zurndorfer) Hanauer, both originally from Rexingen. Otto did a family tree that traced the family in Germany back about 400 years. My grandparents were Jewish, and were able to leave Germany in 1938, when they came to the US and settled in Chicago.

Hi. I just learned that my maternal great great grandmother was a Hanauer. Her name was Fannie, she came from Germany to Texas in the 1800s. She was married to Leopold Steiner. One or both of them may have been from Darmstadt-Hesse. My great grandmother, their daugher, was born in Texas in 1861. If you think you have information about Fannie's family or may be related, please let me know! Thanks.

Hallo all you Hanauers,
i recently started a genealogy of my family.
I was surprised to find such a lot of Hanauers in the US.
What I still miss is a root back to Europe, where I think the name has its origin. I come from the town of Bamberg which is located in Bavaria/Germany. There are roots to a region close to Bamberg to the town of Viechtach in the East. Another trace leads to a city called Hanau some 200 kilometers to the NW of Bamberg.
Do you know anything about where the name stems from?
Do you know a source of information?
Best Greetings from Germany
Thomas

Dear Dr. Hanauer,
I came to the surname HANAUER in my family tree thru 2 ways.

New fact and theory of my Hanauer family:
Fact:
My great grandfather Max Hanauer, born in Bavaria in 1880. His parents, David Hanauer (one of many siblings) & Julie Seligenbrunn, both of whom to be of Jewish heritage.
Max had an older sister name Irmi, nicknamed Jenny.
Max left Cuxhaven, on the SS Deutschland on April 23, 1903.
Max landed on Ellis Island on May 1, 1903. He was one of 30 passengers.
Theory:
Max spent 3 years in America. He had stayed in Utah for a short time with a relative who was in banking.
Max was in San Francisco during the 1906 earthquake. I have 2 copies of pictures taken after the quake.
I am positive he became fluent in the English language.
I know that he was in the Military in the beginning of his marriage to my great grandmother, Freida Martha Teske.
Freida's parents, Christian & Marie Arndt, were Christians.
Freida was born in Pomerania. Freida had a sister named Elise.
I do not know the date or year of Max & Freida's marriage.
Fact:
Max & Freida had two children, Ilse was born in 1916 and Hans (my grandfather) was born in 1918. Both were born in Berlin.
Hans was rebellious. He fell in love with my grandmother, Ursula Rosenfeld and married her, I believe in 1939. My father, Uri Hanauer was born on February 6, 1940, in Berlin.
Fact/Theory:
My grandfather Hans was involved in an organization that helped Jewish people to go to Israel on Kabutz. The organization was called "Hach Ara".
It was his involvement that separated my grandfather, Hans, from his family.
Fact:
Last year I received a postcard that was dated 3 March 1941. It was written by my grandfather while he sat on a train waiting deportation to some sort of training facility. He gave the postcard to the wife of a soldier and she delivered it to my grandmother. The woman even signed it herself. Her name was Ester Binder.
The postcard has been translated by 2 German woman. And both translations were the same.
It was a beautiful love letter to my grandmother. She never saw Hans again. He was murdered in Auschwitz, March 31, 1943. My grandmother, Ursula, my father, Uri, and my great grandfather, Jonas Rosenfeld were transported to Theresienstadt on March 8, 1944. They remained there until June of 1945.
I have documentation on this entire fact.
I have no idea how my grandmother, father, and great grandfather immigrated to America. I have my father's citizenship paper, but there is no record of my family in the National Archives of Records Administration.
I have been unable to find any records on Ursula Hanauer, Uri Hanauer, or Jonas Rosenfeld's entry into this country.
I have found records on Ilse Hanauer & Freida Hanauer's arrival to America.
I would love to know if there are any Hanauer's in Salt Lake City, Utah, that have been in the area for over 100 years. There definitely would be a connection.
I hope that all the Hanauer's out there keep up to date on David Hanauer's wonderful website. The more imput we can give one another, the more we can learn about the Hanauer name.
Terri Hanauer-Brahm
I have been trying to find the truth about my grandfather for so long. As far as I can tell, he was involved in helping the Jews escape Germany to Israel. He had the opportunity to escape himself with my grandmother and father, but my grandmother would not leave her ill mother.
My grandfather's family never forgave my grandmother for not leaving Germany when she had the chance.
I am so thankful that you have allowed me to share my families story of survival on your website. We must never forget the tragedy of the Holocaust.

I am interested to learn more about my sir name. I can tell you that I am one of three sons to Mike and Mary Hanauer, all born in Milwaukee Wis. My Grandfather was James Hanauer, and Grandmother Elsie, I belive. They lived in Milwaukee Wis and have been deceased for roughly 20 years. Grandfather had 7 sons and daughters that I used too know. I have been told he was one of 7-8 siblings. What I don't know and neither do the rest of the family (as far as I know)is whom my Great Grandfather was? I have been told Grandpa and Grandma both migrated to the US as children. Any help would be appreciated. I have two sons, and each of my brothers have a son.

My grandfather's name was Han's Hanauer (Han's was murdered in Auschwitz), my grandmother's name was Ursula Rosenfeld before marrying my grandfather. My grandmother and father were sent to Theresienstadt at the same time my grandfather went to Auschwitz. They were released on June 7, 1945. They came to America shortly after that. Hans had a sister Ilse Hanauer, Their parents were Max Hanauer and Frieda Teske. Max had a sister named Jenny Hanauer. Max and Jenny's Parents were David Hanauer and Julie ?. I do know that David had 10 brothers (this could be the reason there are so many of us Hanauer's in the world) David was a brewer and exporter of brewing ingredients to Russia and China. Max too was a brewer when he came over to America in 1903. He stayed until 1906, then went back to Germany. He then built a factory in Berlin and manufactured raincoats. After the war started, the factory was taken from my family. The only names I've gotten for the factory are Behrens Bauman Nachfolger. I found information on Peter Behrens who was a famous architect who I believe built the factory. The other two words are a mystery. Max Hanauer belonged to The Bavarian Club and was very prominent in Berlin before the war started. I have many pictures from the early 1900's. I would love to know if any of you other Hanauer's may think we have a link. Unfortunately my father passed away in 1981. My only other relative is Juliette Hanauer, she is the daughter of Ilse Hanauer. We are searching to find out who her father is. Ilse Passed away this past December. I hope to hear from you soon.

My father, Ralph Hanauer was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was the only child of Hans and Nora Hanauer. My grandfather, Hans Hanauer, was born in Hamburg, Germany. His parents were Richard and Elizabeth Hanauer. My grandfather had two siblings, Bernd and Hannelora.
Strange to see that there are so many Hanauers out there! I figured that it was a very uncommon surname.

I was born in VA Jan 29, 1979. My father is Donald Howard Hanauer who lives in VA and was born in CT. His father (my grandfather of course) was Donald Hanauer, 044-24-8943, (10 Aug 1931 - 19 Sep 2001) who lived in Kerrville, TX and was born in CT. My father’s brother George “Ted” Hanauer passed in 1998 but is not on your list. Thomas Havaland Hanauer is my father’s half-brother (half-brother is misleading because he will always be 100% family). His middle name Havaland comes from the maiden name of my grandfather’s mother (my father may need to verify this. I have an older brother Donald Howard Hanauer II who lives in the same town in VA as my parents. I love my last name (not a related topic to the paragraph but I had to throw it in). I have a daughter Casey Elizabeth Hanauer born June 19, 2002 in San Angelo, TX.
I encourage my relatives to post more about our family. For example, Thomas should post his siblings and other family members.

I live in Canyon Country, CA (Northern Los Angeles County). I am the son of Leonard Hanauer, Brother of Carl Hanauer, Cousin of Gary Hanauer and Sandy Hanauer Bursten, the creator of this genologic tree. My uncles and grandfather have been previewed on earlier sign-ins. I have no children, so, I'm leaving the continuation of Hanauer up to my Cousin and Brother. Brother Carl has a son, ....... My wife and I plan a visit for an east coast vacation soon and will certainly visit the Massachusetts Hanauer clan.

Attention: Jerry Hanauer, Pacific Coast Feather Company
My husband and I recently stayed at the Heritage House in Mendocino, CA where all the beds have your mattress covers which are great. I was born in Germany and my first job after graduating from the University of Tuebingen as a laboratory technician was at the Buehle Hoehe in the Black Forest near Baden Baden. This would be the mid to late 1950s. This was a very exclusive health resort and I met there and became friendly with a guest named Hanauer, who I believe had the first name, Fredrich. He was in the feather business also and he was from Stuttgart. I assume he was an ancestor of yours? I kept in contact after I left the Buehle Hoehe, but lost the contact when I came to the United States. I remember that he drove a big, American Cadillac convertible which was certainly unique in Germany at that time.
I would enjoy hearing anything relating to this gentleman.
Sincerely,
Helga (Niedner) Johnson
